How To Test The Starter Of Your Motorcycle

Last week, I bought a new motorcycle as a reward after working hard for years. I love riding motorbikes and hearing the wind blowing through my ears. The higher speed I had, the more controlled I feel with my life. I’m sure you share the same feeling with me. However, the problem came when I heard the sound of the engine was quite small and weak. Therefore, I decided to test the starter. Due to various data learned in only a week and a lack of experience, I met quite many troubles.

For example, I could not identify which one is the positive or negative, and I had no idea about how to remove the battery from my motorbike. It took me an entire day to both memorize the theories and work on the process. That is why in this article today, I will share with you how to test a motorcycle starter. It is easy, but there are relatively numerous phases that you will need to remember and practice. So pay attention!


You are going to need some equipments to follow this tutorial:

  • A battery
  • A multi-meter
  • A motorcycle starter

So these are what you are going to do to test your starter

Step 1: Make sure the battery is fully charged


To check the starter, you will need the energy from the motorcycle battery. If you run the starter solely, the multi-meter will have nothing to connect with, and you won’t be able to measure anything.So remove the battery from your vehicle and charge it before doing anything.


Step 2: Disable the engine


This step is critical. When the engine is not disabled, the battery will always make it start for running, and that is not what we want. We only want the igniter to work, give us some of the engine sounds, and make the number on the volt meter to jump.

There are various ways to disable the motor, which depends very much on the type of your motorbike. Each one has a safety instruction so you can look it up while doing this step. Otherwise, running all of your fuel is the best method. In most bikes, you can turn the fuel petcock to the opposite side of the round and run the fuel out of it. You can try if your vehicle is one of them.


Step 3: Set the multi-meter to 20 and turn it on


This is not so hard to understand. A multi-meter does not adjust itself so you will have to set it up to a range that it can measure. And its number will only jump around that range. A motorcycle battery is often made around 20 volts; therefore, it’s best if you can turn your multi-meter to 20 for a correct measurement.


Step 4: Test the battery


The next phase is to see how your battery runs and you will need to record the indicator for subsequent calculations.First, you will need to connect the meter leads directly to your battery. In that way, the multimeter can measure the power of the battery when your engine is cranked. Remember to connect both leads and leave the battery on a flat surface.

It will make the connecting process much easier.Now, it’s time to start cranking the engine. One notification that you need to remember is that it is not recommended to crank it over 15 seconds. The batter may burn down due to excessive power. Therefore, about 4 to 5 seconds would be more appropriate and safer.

While cranking the engine, you have to pay attention to the number that the multimeter indicates. After seeing it, stop the engine and write the number down on paper.


Step 5: Test the starter


And this part is the most crucial one of all the steps. When you have done with the battery, it’s time to detach the leads to connect them with the starter.The positive and negative pole of a starter are a little different from a battery, which means that they should be attached to the right leads from the multimeter.

To save your time, you should notice this issue. And the rule is simple: the positive lead connects to the threaded stud on the starter, and the negative one is to the frame. Then, check the wire carefully to ensure that there are no leaks.Finally, repeat the step of cranking the engine and note the indicator you see on the same paper.


Step 6: Calculate the gap


Now, to discover whether your motorcycle starter actually works, you will have to make a small calculation. If the indicator of the starter is only less than 1 volt different from that of the battery, your motorbike is perfect and does not have any excessive drops voltage.
