How To Paint Engine Of A Motorcycle

Last month, I received a very special gift from my mother on my birthday. It was the old motorcycle of my dad, which he used to ride when I was still alive and healthy. I was really surprised because I had always wanted to have a motorcycle of my own and that was also what my father left. Therefore, I took it and started the repairing process.

Although the motorcycle was about 20 years old, there was not much to fix. It seemed that my father maintain its spare parts very well. So I started with painting the engine because it was all rusty and could not keep it original color anymore. After a day learning from several people and tutorial videos on Google, as well as having some difficulties in choosing the right color, I finally finished the task.

Many people say that painting the engine will diminish its air-cooled system. But according to my opinion, it depends on the color and the interior coating that you choose. Phase 1: Preparation

• Cleaning

In my case, all the surface of the engine was rusty. Therefore, cleaning it was a necessary thing to. Besides, it is usually covered with dirt and oil, so cleaning its parts will make it much easier for you to paint.

You can use water and a little baking soda powder to make it clean. Just soak it in a basin of baking soda powder dissolving with water and wait about 15 to 20 minutes. All of the dirt and oil will come out without taking too much effort. Or you can take a degreaser, if you have, or paper towel to have the interstices cleaned up. Otherwise, there are various useful ingredients, such as vinegar, salt, or lemon. You can try if you want.

But remember to wash only the parts that do not contain the engine, which means you have to clean the cover, not the engine. I’m sure you already know this so I’m just making a notification in case there is something wrong or you may forget.

• Removing the old paint

To paint the new color on the engine, you need to erase the old one. I will give you two methods to do this.

First, you can use an abrasive sand blaster. It is fundamentally a machine that spraying sand with a high speed to the surface of metal. It can make it smoother and in our case, make the old paint disappear.

If you don’t have one, don’t worry. It is sold in all of the stores selling pneumatic tools and with a reasonable price. And it looks like this one in the picture

The second way is that simpler. You can use Aircraft Remover, which is a type of oil to erase the old color. You can easily find it in every paint store. However, it is also a quite heavy chemical that will damage your skin if you accidentally touch it. Therefore, it’s best to use gloves and a paintbrush while using it. The thicker your gloves are, the more protection your skin will have.

Just soak the brush in the oil and spread it on the surface of the engine. After only 2 or 3 minutes, you will see dregs emerging on it. Remove it with a scraper to protect it and your skin as well. When you are done, the real and shiny surface of the engine will appear.

For me, I never liked the paint having dark colors, such as black, gray, or dark brown. They will make your engine get extremely heated under the sun and eventually burn it down. I would prefer something lighter. For example, aluminum, silver, or titanium. Your engine will shine and sparkle when the sunlight shines through. You can try my suggestion if you like.

• Painting each part

After the pain color is picked, you can begin the most crucial part.

To do it, place the components on a cardboard box or nylon surface. The color won’t be spilled or sift to other things. Then, start spraying it on your engine just like when you spray artificial dew to celebrate in parties. It sounds a little funny but it’s precisely the movement.
